OA-North View provides a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum which is designed to meet the individual needs, aptitudes and aspirations of pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans. The school offers a curriculum that provides pupils with experience in linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, physical and aesthetic and creative education.
OA-North View supports children and young people for whom traditional teaching methods have not worked.
Curriculum content is designed to promote pupils’ intellectual, social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in British society. The curriculum is designed to support academic learning, personal development and preparation for adulthood and actively promotes fundamental British values. Through the curriculum, pupils are taught to respect people with protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010 and to develop an understanding of diversity, equality and inclusion within British society.
The curriculum is ambitious and intended to support our pupils to engage with learning and develop the knowledge, skills and understanding across a broad and balanced curriculum and provides pupils with the opportunity to develop their foundational knowledge including speaking, listening, literacy and numeracy skills. It supports pupils to make progress, develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required for adult life and further education.
The school provides a safe and engaging environment and endeavours to remove or help pupils overcome barriers to learning and promote opportunities for pupils to succeed in school, in the next stage of their education or training and in their adult lives.
We recognise that pupils in a specialist SEMH independent school should all have the opportunity to learn and make progress and therefore the schemes of work are sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills can be built upon every lesson and any gaps in learning can be rectified. An assessment system is used that enables regular, accurate data gathering, analysis and monitoring. We understand the need to address a pupil’s gaps in prior knowledge and skills and we have a curriculum which enables us to adapt our teaching to address these. Classrooms and other learning environments are organised so that pupils have full access to a range of suitable resources and equipment including adaptations to meet their individual needs.
We also recognise that pupils deserve the opportunity to achieve academic success and we offer a range of academic qualifications including GCSEs, Functional Skills Awards and vocational qualifications which enable pupils to access suitable courses in the next stage of their education, training or employment.
