Our approach to teaching and our school curriculum provide meaningful, effective learning and inclusion for all our pupils.
All pupils are assessed when they join OA-North View to identify their strengths and needs.
Parents and carers are involved in these discussions at their child's induction meeting when they first join the school.
We offer personalised planning and differentiation for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). You can find further information in our SEND information report and in our SEND policy and our accessibility plan available on our policies page.
What special educational needs does OA-North View support?
OA-North View supports children and young people primarily with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
You can find further information about our curriculum and our approach in our school policies.
All local authorities publish information about how children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported in their area. This is known as the local offer. Find out more about the Thurrock Local Offer.
The Thurrock SEN Service’s ‘Your Aspirations, Our Priority’ monthly podcast speaks directly to parents, carers, children, young people and professionals on topics that matter to them, including information about the SEND Local Offer. Click here for more information and to listen.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
At OA-North View, we value and celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of our pupils. We are committed to ensuring that pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL) can fully access education, participate in school life, and make strong academic and personal progress.
We support EAL pupils through high-quality teaching, adapted resources, targeted language development, pastoral support, and close partnership with families. Staff consider each pupil's language proficiency, educational background, and individual needs to ensure they can access the curriculum and thrive within our school community.
For further information, please see our EAL policy on our policies page.
At OA-North View, we use the Bell Foundation EAL Assessment Framework to ensure that pupils who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) receive appropriate support and can access the curriculum alongside their peers.
The framework provides a clear progression model that helps staff assess a pupil's developing English language proficiency across speaking, listening, reading and writing. Rather than focusing on perceived academic ability, it recognises that many EAL pupils have strong cognitive skills and subject knowledge but may require additional support to demonstrate their understanding in English.
Using the Bell Foundation Framework allows teachers to:
· Identify each pupil's current stage of English language development.
· Plan targeted teaching strategies and appropriate scaffolds to support learning.
· Monitor progress consistently over time.
· Remove barriers to learning and promote equal access to the curriculum.
· Differentiate effectively while maintaining high expectations for achievement.
· Ensure that assessment accurately reflects language acquisition needs as well as academic progress.
It encourages a whole-school approach to language development, ensuring that all staff understand their role in supporting language acquisition across subject areas.
In line with the Equality Act 2010 and Department for Education guidance, the Bell Foundation Framework helps schools meet their responsibility to provide appropriate support for pupils with EAL.
Ultimately, the Bell Foundation Framework enables us to assess, support and celebrate the progress of EAL learners, ensuring they develop both the language skills and confidence required to succeed in secondary education and beyond. For further information on how we support our EAL pupils please see our EAL policy on our policies page.
